Education Secretary calls for tech and education industries to collaborate

In order to relieve pressure on teachers, the Education Secretary wants the IT and education industries to unite, cooperate and collaborate more readily.

Damian Hinds last week urged the technology sector to provide innovations badly needed in education. Stating the requirement for cutting-edge technology in educational settings from primary to higher, he noted the potential of AI and robotics in particular.

Speaking at the World Education Forum, he urged tech industry figures and organisations from grassroots level, such as startups, up to multinationals like Microsoft and Apple to contribute to education. This would enable staff and students alike to learn and grow through technology. Whether through tools or other teaching and educational innovations, the need to improve teaching practice is central to improving education across the UK and the world.

Close collaboration and ready information

Hinds noted that while schools, universities and colleges have the power to choose which technology tools and programmes best suit their needs and budgets, they lack the knowledge of the industry and its products to do so. By collaborating with education providers and governments, technology companies can build worthwhile, sustainable solutions which can support learners and educators for years to come. 

For Hinds, five areas must be addressed in the tech industry: 

  1. The improvement of teaching practices
  2. Enhancing processes for assessment
  3. Making training practices more effective and useful
  4. Updating administration processes to lessen their burden and confusion
  5. Offering support for those who aren't actively pursuing or engaging in education

In addressing these areas, educators will be freed up to concentrate on the basics of teaching children, young people and adults, and not constrained by the administration tasks that keep them from the classroom and working for longer hours than necessary.

Teaching is, and can be, used in revolutionary ways, Hinds noted - citing the abilities to explore the planet from the classroom via virtual reality and mapping, as well as being able to programme robots and other artificial intelligence devices. If technology companies and ambassadors were able to widen the training of teachers and share best practice, then education would be drastically improved upon.
