Microsoft has announced that customers with Windows 10 subscriptions purchased via the Cloud Solution Provider programme can upgrade their Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs and devices to Windows 10 at no extra cost.

Windows 10 Enterprise E3 was made available as a partner delivered cloud service in September 2016. This was done in response to demand – from customers and partners – for a partner-managed cloud service subscription, enabling businesses of any size to access the security, management and control features of the Windows Enterprise edition, and without the need for a long-term volume licensing agreement. At the time Microsoft said that they wished to encourage technology resellers and solution providers looking to offer Windows 10 Enterprise subscriptions to their customers to reach out to authorised CSP distributors (such as Vuzion) for more information about signing up as CSP resellers.

Of the January Windows 10 CSP upgrade announcement Microsoft says, “This is an important benefit addition to Windows cloud subscriptions in CSP as it enables customers who have yet to purchase a new Windows 10 device, or who missed out on the free upgrade to Windows 10 campaign, to take advantage of enterprise-grade security, managed by a trusted partner, for the price of coffee and a donut.”

To implement the upgrade, tenant admins log in to the Office 365 Admin center (using Active Directory admin credentials) and can upgrade the device they are using and share the download link with others.

The Windows 10 upgrade licences issued via this process are perpetual for that device, and will not expire or be revoked if a customer decides to end their Windows cloud subscription in the CSP programme.

Julian Dyer, Vuzion CTO, comments, “Vuzion CSP resellers who are serious in being able to offer a complete managed service to their customers should rejoice at this change.

“The challenges of customer endpoint device management (PC, tablets and smartphones, etc.) are a potentially lucrative managed service offering. Being able to offer this benefit to customers, adds to the business value of a cloud orientated managed service.”
