New purchasing models, upgrades and improvements across the board; we have summarised April’s Azure updates for you below.
Just announced: A new way to purchase Microsoft Azure monitoring services
As of April 2018, there’s a new purchasing experience for the monitoring services. The three main features of the new pricing model revolve around:
- PAYG pricing – Now you can pay as you go- you’ll only pay for what you use.
- Per GB metering – The pricing model for data ingestion has changed from ‘per node’ to ‘per GB’. This change came at a request from users, who found more value in monitoring the amount of data received, than the number of nodes.
- Existing customers to get a choice of pricing models – Following on, existing customers who have uses cases optimised for the current ‘per node’ model will not be disrupted as they can choose to continue with the current pricing model.
SQL Elastic Pool configuration improvements
In order to simplify the user experience for configuring elastic pools, the following updates have been made:
- Changing service tiers for existing pools – These can be scaled up or down between service tiers, which will allow you the flexibility to investigate which one best fits your business needs. This comes with the option of scaling down your pool outside of business hours to save money.
- A simplified configuration for pools and their databases – This update separates and simplifies pool management, with the distinction between the pool settings, database settings and database management.
- New cost summary – Your bill will be broken down into each setting which contributes to your monthly spend.

Since being announced in January 2018, Azure Data Factory has gathered user feedback in order to fine-tune the user experience. Its visual interface now allows users to export data factories as an Azure Resource Manager template at the click of a button. You’ll get a template file, containing all the metadata of the data factory, and a configuration file, containing environment parameters.
Better performance and scalability options in an Azure SQL Data Warehouse upgradeThe preview for Optimized for Compute has been released, which promises to provide customers with an enhanced service. It has a five-times increase in computer scalability and there is now no limit on storage for columnar data.
As well as this, there’s a significant boost in performance for query workloads. If you’re an existing Optimized for Elasticity user, you can upgrade from within the Azure Portal (without any change in your connection string details).
