Microsoft Azure | October 2017 Updates

Categories: Cloud Infrastructure Product Updates
Tags: Microsoft Azure

We’re only halfway through November and yet we’ve already seen a whole host of welcomed new updates for Microsoft Azure.

Here is the pick of the latest announcements from the October/November period, as well as a summary of the most eye-catching recent updates.

Automatic upgrades for VM scale sets

A new set of automation features were introduced last week that will allow for the automatic upgrading all virtual machines (VMs) in your scale set to the latest version. This allows you to deploy the latest patches, including critical security updates, without the added cloud infrastructure management costs of manual checking and installation.

Application Insights chart widget for VSTS dashboards

Also announced last week was the long-awaited addition of an Application Insights chart widget for VSTS dashboards. You can use the widget to track selected metrics and details, such as time ranges and granularity. You can also choose the type of chart – line, area or column - depending on your data and preferences.

Managed Applications general availability

This is more of interest to Azure partners than end users, but still important, as it allows these partners to deploy entire applications that are easy for consumers to operate within the partner’s environment. The feature is now generally available in the Azure Market.

IoT Suite Remote Monitoring

The updated version of Remote Monitoring is now available as a preconfigured solution for the Azure IoT Suite. This solution allows you to respond to an alarm, organise assets, update firmware in your devices and filter devices on the dashboard.

Windows Server v1709 on Azure

The Windows Server version 1709 was announced at the Ignite event in September and released on 1 November. This is the first release in a newly accelerated schedule of Windows Server updates, with new releases now set to appear twice each year.

A round up of last month’s updates

There were a number of announcements and updates throughout October as well. These included the upgrade service of the Microsoft Data Accelerator Program, the addition of visual monitoring capabilities to Azure Data Factory v2 and a feature allowing you to stream processing tools and services, as well as giving you the ability to keep a log by sending your events to an Event Hub.

As well as the new features and upgrades added over the past few weeks, there was also the usual increase in offers in the Azure Marketplace, with 38 new offers added in October.
