You may have heard or read the BBC business news article published today (23 April 2019), reporting that 55% of UK companies have already suffered a cyberattack this year - and which is a massive rise from the 40% reporting a cyberattack in 2018.
The statistic comes from research conducted by insurance company, Hiscox, and which also points to almost 75% of UK businesses admitting to being under-prepared to meet the growing cyber threat.
This highlights the great opportunity that exists for managed service providers and systems integrators to help customers enhance their cyber defences and policies, and to continue to educate users about the threat landscape, and the options for safeguarding against cybercrime.
The biggest problem that businesses face now is, ‘not knowing what they don’t know’, and thinking that they’re not at risk.
For the research, Hiscox surveyed more than 5,400 organisations, from across the UK, Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and the US. While, overall the number of those realising a high score for cyber security has dropped, the UK records particularly badly, with companies in the UK currently reporting the lowest security budgets, with an average of $900,000 compared with that of $1.46m across the survey.
Personally, I believe that IT service providers have a responsibility to continually review and recommend or indeed implement security changes for customers. It’s a great opportunity to continually optimise your managed service and drive additional projects, to create closer customer engagement whilst helping them be more secure.
Secure Score from Microsoft, for example, is a great tool to help show customers where they are today security-wise in their cloud services, what the baseline should be, and the steps you can take or recommend to your customers to take, to increase their protection - and there are often some really quick wins to increase the level of protection.
And of the numbers of organisations appointing a specific cyber-security position across each country, Hiscox’s research points to the UK ranking joint-bottom (with the US). This represents a fantastic opportunity for you to help fulfil this role and provide the guidance and advice UK businesses desperately need to secure their business.
