Up until recently, news about the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and readiness among UK organisations to meet the regulation’s requirements largely featured stories reporting lack of preparation, and even of insufficient understanding of the regulation itself.
But, it’s becoming clear that businesses and organisations across the board industry-wise are realising that there’s now only just over six months until the new data regulation comes into effect on 25 May 2018 – and working towards GDPR compliance is moving centre stage for many.
For example, the PDF created by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) – and the UK’s GDPR regulatory authority – Preparing for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – 12 steps to take now has now been viewed 73,000 times since May, and is – as the ICO reports – the most downloaded document on the ICO website.
That confusion about the regulation remains – particularly among SMEs –– is evidenced, however, through articles such as that featuring in ComputerWeekly, and posted earlier this week. With GDPR created to shift control of personal data back to the owner of that data, Most UK small businesses in the dark over GDPR highlights that, “Small to medium enterprises (SMEs) are struggling to come to grips with what “personal data” really means.”
Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham says, “There are 5.4 million businesses in the UK that employ fewer than 250 people. When it comes to data protection, surveys show they tend to be less well prepared. We know that most businesses want to get things right but often struggle to find the key steps to get started.”
At Vuzion we’re experiencing a rise in queries from partners requesting information about GDPR, and asking how they can support their customers in understanding the requirements, as well as providing advice about the technology that can help businesses meet the requirements.
At our Love Cloud GDPR event, held last week at Microsoft UK in Paddington, we announced details of Vuzion’s Customer Journey Package. Incorporating information forums and activities delivered by independent GDPR consultancy Cybercrowd (ranging from workshops, to GDPR health checks and readiness assessments), the package also highlights the steps at which businesses should be looking at the technology that can help with compliance.
And if you weren’t able to book a place for Love Cloud GDPR last week, which focused on the technology that can help businesses work towards compliancy (including from Microsoft, DocuSign, and Acronis), you can view the presentation slides via our GDPR hub.
With regard to Vuzion’s own GDPR compliance preparations, Michael Olpin, Vuzion Finance Director, says, “Vuzion has a strong compliance culture and the security of its data is of paramount importance. This is reflected in its ISO 27001 certification.
“Vuzion is actively monitoring regulator guidance and interpretations of key GDPR requirements to ensure that its data protection processes are compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by 25 May 2018.”
Technology represent only part of the focus for organisations when working to meet GDPR requirements, but nevertheless introduction of the regulation represents a huge opportunity for partners -a $3.5 billion opportunity according to Microsoft.
