August 2018 saw a number of Azure updates — here’s a quick roundup:
Monitor Data Factory pipelines with Operations Management Suite
This new feature will ensure that your pipelines are healthy, and help you to troubleshoot problems and prevent future ones. What’s more, the data will provide useful insight for the Data Factory application in general — allowing you to make the very most of it. For more info, take a look at this post: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/monitor-azure-data-factory-pipelines-using-operations-management-suite/
SAP Cloud Platform for Azure
Cloud Platform, SAP’s multi-cloud service, has completed its stint in beta and is now transitioning to Azure. This will extend the SAP development choices available on Azure, and constitutes the first fully-managed multi-tenant, Cloud Foundry PaaS on Azure.
When equipped, you’ll be able to:
✔ Use a wide range of SAP HANA offerings on Azure
✔ Integrate with Azure-Native services
✔ Integrate with Azure Active Directory
✔ Enable Single Sign-On for SAP Cloud Platform
Service Bus and Events Hub IP filters
Sometimes, Service Bus and Events Hubs can only be used if the given site is well known. IP filters allow you to circumvent this issue, and configure rules for traffic to suit your needs. This will be available in Service Bus Premium, as well as the Events Hub Standard and Dedicated plans.
Azure HDInsight and Apache Spark 2.3
From now, Apache Spark 2.3.0 is available for Azure HDInsight. This new version benefits from around 1400 bug fixes, as well as new ‘experimental’ features, including ORC format native readers and continuous structured streaming processing. Read more about it here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/azure-hdinsight-now-supports-apache-spark-2-3/
Azure Data Box disc
Azure Data Box was previewed last year, and has had great feedback. A new product has now been released in the Data Box family, a disc that leverages the same data transfer advantages as its predecessor, but is far more easily installed and applied. Find out more about it here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/welcome-our-newest-family-member-data-box-disk/
Azure Database for PostgreSQL and MySQL
There is a very wide range of updates for this service, ranging from security and support to recovery and memory. The full list can be found here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/latest-updates-to-azure-database-for-postgresql/
Likewise, there were several updates for MySQL too. Large databases are now better supported, and enhanced security measures have been made. Find out more here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/latest-updates-to-azure-database-for-mysql/
Azure NetApp preview files
Deploying file-based applications has posed a challenge due to their performance, and scalable nature. This is set to be rectified by a new Microsoft and NetApp collaboration, which utilises the well-regarded ONTAP technology to enhance performance, scalability, data management and more. See how it can benefit your team here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/azure-netapp-files-now-in-public-preview/
Integrated subscriptions with Azure Security Centre
Azure Security Centre is now available in public preview from within the subscription experience. This will allow for quick assessment of the security status of resources and will provide recommendations too. Inspire 2018 Marketplace news
Microsoft's annual partner conference, Inspire, took place in Las Vegas last month, and brought a wealth of new, innovative products. Find out more about them, and what happened here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/marketplace-news-from-inspire-2018/
Moving your e-commerce to Azure
Moving e-commerce infrastructure to Azure is a common task for retailers, but can often be a struggle. This handy guide will prove useful for those embarking on the task: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/how-to-move-e-commerce-infrastructure-to-azure/
Finance has a wide range of challenges that are unique to the sector. Azure is adapting to reflect this. There will now be a range of new features for financial analysis, as well as new tamper-proof immutable blob storage. This latter feature allows data to be stored in a non-rewritable and non-erasable format at no additional cost.
AAD Activity Logs
There’s now an AAD Activity Log public preview with Azure Monitor diagnostic settings. These will allow you to stream log data to three destinations: a storage account; an Event Hubs namespace, and/or a Log Analytics workspace.
SQL Data Warehouse
Finally, SQL Data Warehouse will now serve you with intelligent performance insights from within the Azure portal. This means that you’ll no longer need to monitor data warehouse to detect data skew and suboptimal stats in your table. These can degrade your data warehouse performance if left to their own devices and the new features will prove particularly useful in counteracting them. Find out more here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/automatic-intelligent-insights-to-optimize-performance-with-sql-data-warehouse/
✔ Service Identity - there have been numerous Service Identity Updates for Azure AD. You can read about them here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/azure-ad-managed-service-identity-updates/
✔ Speech service - it’s been a while since Speech service previewed. Find out what August had in store for the service: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/blog/speech-services-july-2018-update/
