Microsoft Office 365 | October 2018 Update

This October, there's been an important round of updates for Microsoft Office 365. We've written a handy summary for you - for the complete roundup, take a look at the video below.

Office 365: Subscriptions
Previously on various Office 365 Subscription plans, there were strict limits on the number of users and devices available at any one time. Office 365 Home was limited to 10 devices across five users, and personal users were able to sign in on one PC/Mac and one tablet. Now, subscribers can sign in on an unlimited number of devices and are able to sign in on a maximum of five at a time. The number of licenses available in a Home subscription has also been boosted to six.

OneDrive: Files On-Demand for Mac
A key piece of functionality missing from 365 for Macs has been the ability to access files on-demand. This handy update means that it's incredibly simple to access all your files, but only the ones you specifically need to be stored on locally on your hard drive. This massively reduces the amount of storage you'll need, and because you can still find files easily in Finder, you won't have to change the way you work. You've also got the option to manually select which files you want to keep locally by right-clicking and selecting 'Always keep on this device'.

OneDrive: iOS Super Zoom
With the abundance of high-quality phones and tablets on the market for photo viewing, it's no surprise users are welcoming the pinch-to-zoom feature to enable them to use a simple pinch gesture to zoom in on their photos in OneDrive. With increased functionality, you can zoom out to scroll through large blocks of photos easily, or zoom in if you'd like a larger preview. Super Zoom is already available for those using OneDrive on Android, but not yet for commercial account users. This update could be available later this year.

Word and PowerPoint: Use @mention in comments to tag someone for feedback
You are probably familiar with the use of the @ symbol on various social media apps, or on Microsoft Teams. Now, you can do the same in the comments of Word and Powerpoint documents to easily get someone's attention and collaborate with your team much more easily - they'll be notified instantly of your tag via email and can join the conversation.

Outlook: Revamped user experience
A common complaint about many user experience redesigns is that they don't give users a chance to get used to the new look and feel of a product. With this update, users can trial elements of UX redesign with the 'coming soon' feature, giving them a chance to test out new features in their own time before general roll out.

Power BI Built-in report theme option
Themes in Word, Excel and PowerPoint are great options to give your work a distinct, unified aesthetic. Now, users can apply themes directly to Power BI too, simply by selecting their preference from the 'Switch theme' drop-down on the Home ribbon. Users will also have the option to create their own theme if they want to make something based on their organisation's specific branding, for example.

SharePoint: New file template management
Users will now be able to edit templates for a range of Office programs (such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint), easily reorder files and manage which they'd like to see directly from SharePoint.
