Microsoft Power BI | November 2017 Updates

We report below on the November 2017 updates for Microsoft Power BI Desktop, with the most recent version of Power BI now available for businesses to download or to purchase from the Windows Store.

Table and Matrix visuals

With rule-based conditional formatting, rules can be defined to determine colour backgrounds and column font colours. The addition of a cell alignment control to row and column headers and specific fields in Field formatting, enables elements to be aligned to the left, to the right or to the centre.

Selection pane visual

The selection pane, launched last month, was introduced to simplify the process for selecting objects on the report page, and November has seen a visual ordering feature added. This feature enables users to designate the overlapping objects to display at the top, with arrows appearing in the pane or a drag and drop function used to order priorities.

Locking objects

To prevent unintentional layout editing during report analysis, Microsoft has introduced the facility to temporarily disable Resize and Move and lock objects within the report.

Cell-level formatting

Multi-dimensional Analysis Services (AS) cell-level formatting will now flow and activate automatically, with analytics support enhanced to include multi-row cards.

Impala and Windows Authentication

Support for Windows Authentication to the Impala connector has been added during November, with the result that users can use Windows as authentication in Credentials. Comparable support for the on-premises data gateway and Kerberos-based Single Sign-On support for Impala is expected next month.

Add Column from Example

With the Add Columns From Examples feature in query editing, users can now define ‘conditional columns’, with the ability to create a basic conditional column (determined by examples), conditional column ranges, and – more specialised – with cases such as ‘null fallback’ or ‘bucketing’.

Other updates

Enhancements have been announced to the Power BI filtering process, and the custom visual store has been updated with a number of new custom visuals. Following the introduction of Esri's ArcGIS Maps for Power BI in June, a further subscription has been introduced by Esri – Plus – to give users better mapping capabilities. And finally, we report that new options have been created, to reduce queries when dealing with uncommonly large or slow data sources in DirectQuery.
