Vuzion Buys into Microsoft’s UK Datacenters

Taking the number of cloud regions geographically to 34, at the beginning of September Microsoft announced the opening of their first datacentres to be located in the UK.

Based in London, Durham and Cardiff, and hosting Azure and Office 365, creation of the new datacentres is expected to accelerate uptake of the cloud in the UK.

Julian Dyer, Chief Technical Officer at Vuzion, says, “This latest generation of datacenters will provide the fastest, most capable Azure platform and enable Microsoft to serve more customers faster and simultaneously.

“It means a higher capacity for more service providers.”

Establishing datacenters in the UK will address the data residency issue which could in the past prove a barrier to organisations moving to the cloud. Certain UK businesses and services are restricted to retaining data within the UK – the defence industry, financial institutions, for example, as well as those constrained by specific corporate requirements.

“Where will customer data reside? This is certainly a question raised by many of our resellers, and has proved an obstacle to cloud – but will no longer be the case,” Julian continues. “As a company we were one of the first to buy into Infrastructure-as-a-service in the UK.”

The new facilities will also address latency issues to improve scenarios incorporating interactive or real-time voice and video applications.

Azure customers will continue to select a datacenter having accessed a specific region, while new Office 365 customers will automatically default to a UK datacenter.
