Shortly before the end of 2016 we celebrated Vuzion’s parent company Cobweb’s 20th anniversary – 20 years in the cloud!
While looking back over Cobweb’s journey, we mapped the developments that have taken place in cloud technology generally over the last twenty years – and that have made such a far-reaching difference to working and personal life.
2017 and we’re on the cusp of a fourth industrial revolution – with the next twenty years destined to bring even more sweeping changes. More immediately, though, here are my predictions for cloud technology in 2017 – my ‘Seven for 2017’.
Firstly, I anticipate businesses moving to embrace digital transformation to an even greater degree, as recognition grows of the benefits this brings to customer service, employee engagement and for product innovation.
And cloud adoption will continue to rise. More than half of Microsoft’s SMB revenue comes from the cloud already, and I foresee that 2017 will see an acceleration of this transition.
I also expect Azure to gain more traction. My belief is that there will ultimately be three or four “computers” in the world, with AWS and Azure as two, and Google, IBM, Salesforce and others competing for the less significant places.
Unfortunately,security threats – ransomware, spear phishing, etc. – will continue. Therefore, and particularly with the increasing move of IT to the cloud, 2017 will see security and protection for identity, data, apps, and devices, become an ever more important issue for businesses.
Voice in the cloud is going to grow extensively over the coming years. Today we have on-premise PBX and hosted PBX, and I expect 2017 to see substantial adoption of cloud-based platforms, with, in particular, significant adoption of Skype for Business.
The understanding of how IOT can benefit businesses is growing.This is due in no small part to the developing number of connected experiences to which we are all exposed. My prediction is that there will be a substantial growth in the number of businesses taking advantage of this, including the big data analytics that sit behind any IOT solution.
Although the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is not scheduled to come into force until 2018 (25 May 2018), 2017 will see its impact begin to be felt as businesses recognise they need to at least begin making plans to meet the regulations and putting relevant measures in place.
