The WannaCry attacks made global headlines last month when they targeted a number of high-profile organisations including the NHS in the UK, German rail company Deutsche Bahn and Spanish telecommunications giant Telefónica.
It also targeted millions of small businesses and individuals and infected more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries. Data files on affected computers were encrypted and victims were asked to pay a ‘ransom’ to free them.
It could have been far worse. Symantec Corp, the global leader in cyber security, has now revealed that it blocked almost 22 million WannaCry attacks across 300,000 different end-points. In part, this was achieved using Symantec’s real-time threat intelligence shared across Symantec Endpoint Protection. Customers benefited from multiple layers of cutting-edge protection, including Symantec’s advanced machine learning, network exploit protection, SONAR behavioural protection, and the Intelligent Threat Cloud.
Mike Fey, president and chief operating officer at Symantec, said: “The WannaCry ransomware attack is the largest we’ve ever seen of its kind and we’re pleased to share that Symantec customers benefitted from multiple layers of protection even before it happened, through innovations and new capabilities in our Integrated Cyber Defense Platform."
Michael Frisby, Managing Director at Vuzion, said: “Symantec’s advanced machine learning technologies provided real-time, zero-day, protection for all of our Symantec customers when WannaCry broke out. As Symantec’s Global Intelligence Network automatically shares threat intelligence between Symantec Endpoint, Advanced Threat Protection, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam, Content & Image Control full protection is provided across all protected end-points, including the cloud.”
Symantec advises that all customers ensure they have the Windows security update MS17-010 installed. Symantec Endpoint Management can be used to distribute this and other vital patches and software updates across entire organisations. Symantec Endpoint Protection customers should also check that all the system’s proactive technologies are turned on as the advanced exploit prevention technology will completely block all WannaCry infection attempts.
